What is Alternative Fashion?

Updated: Aug 4, 2020

Alternative fashion is, as the word suggests, an alternative form of presentation that differs from the mainstream fashion. Mainstream is often commercialized and presented in what one may refer to as normal society. Therefore, alternative fashion refers to self-expression in one's appearance that is opposite of societal norms. Artistic, free-thinking individuals often exhibit the fashion styles reflected in Goth, cyberpunk, emo, Lolita, heavy metal, grunge or punk, just to name a few. This is not the complete listing of subcultures that present in a way that grabs or deflects attention from themselves based on their self-expression.

Often, alternative fashion is a form of defiance or non-compliance of societal norms. It is meant to protest conforming with the majority and going against the grain, rather than falling in line. Other times, it is an artistic self-expression of a daydreamer, or hopeless romantic, or symbolic of belonging to a certain group, and there is no consideration given to whether it is normal or not.

Lolita fashion is a branch off from the Natural Kei fashion. It was a statement against being forced to be nothing more than a wife. They felt that they were not treated as people, but rather as an object owned. They started dressing in an artistic, childish way, to break free from the role expected of them and enjoy their youth as independent women. They stand against the objectification of women and the "body focus" of the mainstream world, and rather identify with feminine strength and even a sense of nobility.

Some forms of alternative fashion began with that intent, but were adopted by the mainstream due to their popularity. The Hippie fashion style of the 1950's began due to belief that society was becoming conformist and repressive and therefore, it was time to experience freedom and promote peace and love for all. However, as the popularity of these styles grew, the majority adopted the same appearance. Many joined the movement and if they did not, they still wore the same styles of those who had.

We can compare that to the Emo movement of this generation. This style was originally drawn from the hardcore punk music of the 1980's. The originators of this style were anti-corporate and believed that the corporations were detrimental to the entire nation. They were environmental or animal activists and they believed that large corporations held too much influence in our government and would destroy nature, the environment and even take away justice for animals that were once protected. Many joined the movement, but even if they did not, they adopted the style and now it can hardly be referred to as alternative. Since mainstream fashion designers are gearing fashion towards this community of individuals, and the population is taking notice, it is now becoming more mainstream style.

We have seen a shift in fashion to less expensive, functional pieces produced responsibly and with the treatment of the environment, animals and people in mind. People are increasingly less interested in mass-produced clothing and more interested in finding unique, affordable ways to make a statement. The way musicians, or bands, and other celebrities, choose to dress will continue to influence fashion, as will the internet and store displays. However, statements invented by young people due to the energy, passion, artistic direction and a sense of justice and concern for the future of the planet, are the largest influencers for the direction that alternative fashions might take.
